Challenging season for Chilean stone fruit but record highs in exports of certain species

Printable version
The 2023-2024 season has been a challenging one for Chilean stone fruit, with mixed results in the markets, according to the Chilean Stone Fruit Committee. Despite this, record highs in export volumes and FOB values were reached for Japanese plums, European plums, nectarines, peaches and apricots.

China, the main market (56% of total exports), showed a 25% growth in shipments but only 5% in FOB values. On the other hand, the USA (19% of total exports) increased by 20% in FOB values, although it decreased by 1% in volume.

The president of Frutas de Chile, Iván Marambio, pointed out that 36.5 million boxes were shipped, an increase of 18% over the previous year, and FOB values of USD$519 million (+14%).

By species, exports of Japanese plums grew by 24% (13.9 million boxes), nectarines by 14% (11.6 million boxes) and European plums by 23% (8.1 million boxes). Peaches decreased by 2% (2.8 million boxes), while apricots increased by 48% (0.1 million boxes).

Ignacio Caballero, director of the Carozos Committee, emphasised that the committee's work should represent 80% of the volume exported next season, although there are challenges, especially in China.

The main markets for Japanese plums were China (34%), the USA (19%) and Brazil (9%). For European plums, the majority went to China. For nectarines, China (43%), the USA (24%) and the Netherlands (5%) were the main destinations.

For peaches, the US led (48%), followed by Mexico (21%) and Brazil (11%). China received 60,000 boxes (2% of the total), with expectations of higher volumes in the future.

Caballero noted that Chile's stone fruit exports rank second globally in FOB values between 2014 and 2023, with fresh plums in first place. Chilean nectarines lead the southern hemisphere and rank fifth globally in FOB values.

Finally, Caballero pointed out that there are important opportunities for stone fruits, especially in Asia, and that it is crucial to promote their consumption by highlighting their health benefits.
