Production of melons, among other fruits grown in one of Brazil's main producing regions, Rio Grande do Norte, is expected to fall between 15% and 20% in 2022, according to the Brazilian Association of Exporting Producers of Fruit and Derivatives (Abrafrutas).

This season was highlighted by excessive rains at the beginning of the harvest, in addition to increases in inputs, such as fertilizers, pesticides, diesel, energy, packaging. Another problem for producers is the exchange rate, because the fruits exported by the state are sold in euros, a currency that has become cheaper than the dollar for the first time in 20 years.

On the other hand, there are logistical problems that make it difficult to ship products at regional ports. Some ships stopped calling at ports.

From the union they comment that it will be necessary to increase the price in euros, in foreign currency, which will certainly reduce consumption, and this generates great uncertainty for the future of the sector.
