50% of the areas planted with Hass avocado in Peru are at risk, says Juan Carlos Paredes, president of the Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass).

The problem is that the 23.000 of the 50.000 hectares dedicated to this fruit belong to 7.500 small farmers who are currently suffering the shortage of fertilizers.

If the tree will not receive enough fertilizers this year, in the 2023 season, the exported avocados will arrive at their destinations with ripening problems. This is not evident at the time of harvest, but in the quality of the internal part. Such a situation may result in market losses for Peru.

Projections

Unlike the last 7 years, in which the Hass avocado increased 15% annually in exports, this 2022 would end with only a 5% increase compared to 2021, with some 510.000 tons of exports expected. The low increase is due to the political situation and the logistics crisis, according to ProHass.
