Demand for organic fruit and vegetables increased in Germany and Italy
The new campaign "Made in Nature 2022-2025" was presented during the recent Fruit Logistica. Made in Nature is a project funded by the European Union and CSO Italy to promote the consumption of organic products in Italy, France, Germany and Denmark.
During the presentation of the "Made in Nature 2022-2025" campaign, it was specified that European organic farming continues to develop. Turnover reached approximately 37.4 billion euros, i.e. +18% compared to 2018, the cultivated areas having also increased.
.
Germany
: consumption in 2021 reached approximately 811,000 tonnes of organic fruit and vegetables, i.e. consumption which has increased by 84% in 4 years. The most consumed organic fruits and vegetables are bananas with approximately 130,000 tonnes, representing a share of 17% of total banana consumption on the German market; carrots with approximately 100,000 tons and a market share of 23% of total consumption; citrus with 80,000 tonnes and 10% market share. The organic products with the highest percentages of market share in relation to total consumption are lemons (34%), pumpkins and courgettes (24%).
.
Italy
: consumption in 2021 reached around 339,000 tonnes of organic fruit and vegetables, i.e. consumption that has increased by 10% in 4 years. The most consumed organic fruits and vegetables are oranges with approximately 43,000 tons, representing a share of 10% of the total consumption of oranges on the Italian market; bananas with 40,000 tonnes, representing a share of 10% of total consumption; apples with 39,000 tonnes and a market share of 9% of total consumption. The organic products that show the highest percentages of market share in relation to total consumption are lemons, cherries, apricots and tangerines.
.
France
: the consumption of organic fruit and vegetables fell by 10% in 2021. This drop comes after almost 10 years of growth and could be explained by prices considered too expensive by consumers, in particular due to the economic consequences. of the pandemic.
.
Denmark
: the country remains in 1st place for organic consumption per capita with a share of 13%, expenditure per capita of 384 euros and growth estimated at 10% in 2021. Fruits and vegetables represent around 1/3 of the total market for organic products.
"Made in Nature
: Discover the values of European organic" is a project funded by the European Union and CSO Italy to promote organic fruit and vegetables in Italy, France, Germany and Denmark. With 72 members, CSO Italy brings together the main Italian companies in the production and marketing of fruit and vegetables.
