On April 14, 2022, two high-quality mangoes from Miyazaki Prefecture (Japan) were sold for a record price of 500.000 yen (about $3.990) in the year's first auction at the wholesale market in Miyazaki.

This bid was placed in 2019 and was 2.5 times higher than in 2021, making it a purpose for celebration in the Miyazaki central market.

Miyazaki Prefecture holds 15% of total production of these mangoes, also known as “Taiyo no Tamago” (“sun egg” in Japanese) and are considered a top-grade fruit. To qualify, they must contain 15% of sugar or higher and weigh at least 350 grams. The harvest starts in late April and peaks in late May to June.

According to Tomohiro Ishikawa, the sales and distribution division manager at agricultural cooperative JA Miyazaki, despite having a tough time due to increased resource prices, producers describe the quality of mangoes as excellent again this year.
