In October, the Chilean Avocado Committee began working with the consulting firm Sustenta+ in order to set up its sustainability plan.

According to the president of the Avocado Committee, José Gabriel Correa, they want to focus on this concept to allow producers and marketers to coexist harmoniously with people and the environment.

The Sustenta+ work strategy considers identifying a baseline on business sustainability among the members of the Committee that includes economic, social and environmental aspects. Companies must comply with high international standards such as SASB, GRI, B Impact Assessment and the United Nations Global Compact.

Once the diagnostic process is complete, standards and drivers will be established that will help solve the challenges of the coming years. Then it will conclude with a report that reflects the value of the industry through the information collected.

Lately, the Committee has participated in several initiatives such as the project “Passport of the Aconcagua Valley” together with the Dutch government; and in the realization of a study on the cultivation promoted by Cazalac, a technical organization dependent on Unesco.

According to the results of this study, Chilean avocado crops contribute to 14 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN, which refer to the virtues of the industry as an economic activity with a positive impact on the environment.

Likewise, the Committee develops technified irrigation and will continue to adopt new technologies and recommendations from leading countries.
