Peru became the fourth world exporter of ginger in 2020.

In 2020, Peruvian ginger registered a record of exports totalling 106 million dollars, which means an increase of 156 percent, with export volume of 50.000 tons, 115 percent more than in the previous year, according to data from the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP).

 

The main destinations were the United States (42 million dollars), the Netherlands (39 million dollars), Spain (6 million dollars) and Canada (5 million dollars). Most of Peruvian ginger shipments are transported by sea.

 

Peru exports several types, such as organic ginger (32.500 tons), fresh conventional ginger (15.400 tons) and dehydrated ginger (2.000 tons).

 

The Junín region is the main producing area of ​​this product (more than 90 percent) and has the best ecological conditions for its sowing, in the provinces of Satipo and Chanchamayo.

 

According to the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Peru is already the fourth world exporter of ginger and the sixth with the highest production per hectare worldwide in 2020.
