Germany's imports of fresh agricultural products in the first 3 quarters of 2020 totaled $ 24.904 billion, which is 7 percent more than in the same period in 2019.

351 million of those imports were realized by Peru, which showed a 2 percent contraction compared to the previous year, reported the Federal Statistical Office of Germany.

Thus, Peru became its seventeenth main supplier of agricultural products, with 1.4 percent of participation (0.1 percent less than 2019).

In 2019, avocado, mango, ginger and mandarin performed better and made up 36 percent of the basket.

Avocado. In case of this fruit, German imports totaled 92,031 tons for 278 million dollars, which is 24 percent more in volume and 6 percent more in value, compared to the previous year.

The main supplier of avocado in this market was Peru with 29,125 tons for 73 million, which is 58 percent more in volume and 4 percent more in value compared to 2019.

Mango. German mango imports reached 76,723 tons for 168 million dollars, which is 8 percent more in volume and value compared to the previous year.

Peru is the second most important fruit supplier for Germany, with 33 percent participation (six percentage points more), by shipping 25,448 tons of mango for 43 million dollars, which is 31 percent more in volume and 7 percent more in value.

Ginger. Imports of this product totaled 16,597 tons for 44 million dollars, which is 11 percent more in volume and 26 percent more in value, compared to 2019.

The 2,687 tons of the total (8 million dollars) were supplied by Peru, 60 percent more in volume and 42 percent more in value.

Only 16 percent of product shipments were made directly. The increased supply made Peru the second largest supplier, with a 16 percent share (five percentage points more), after China with its 56 percent.

Mandarin. During the analyzed period, this citrus showed a significant increase.

German citrus imports reached 188,449 tons for 284 million, which is 5 percent less in volume but 28 percent more in value compared to 2019.

The 1,410 tons for 2 million dollars were provided by Peru, which resulted in an increase of 205 percent in volume and 231 percent in value.

In this case, only 19 percent of the shipments were provided directly. The greater supply of Peruvian production allowed Peru to position itself as the eighth largest supplier, with 0.7 percent participation (0.5 percentage points more), leaving Uruguay behind.

The main mandarin suppliers in the European market were Spain and South Africa, with 84 and 5 percent share, respectively.

Bananas and grapes have suffered a reduction in demand.

German imports of bananas totaled 1,002,950 tons worth 754 million dollars, which is 2 percent less in volume and 1 percent less in value.

The 23,089 tons for 21 million were provided by Peru, which is 36 percent less in volume and 32 percent less in value.

Direct shipments of this product made up 31 percent. The dynamics of the offer resulted in putting Peru as the eighth supplier of bananas, with 2 percent of participation (2 percentage points less), being displaced by Nicaragua and Panama.

The most important suppliers of bananas in Germany were Ecuador, with 28 percent of participation, and Costa Rica, with its 26 percent.

Grapes were another product that suffered a reduction in shipments between January and September.

German imports of that fruit totaled 231,435 tons worth 538 million dollars, which is 3 percent more in volume and 13 percent more in value, compared to the previous year.

The 4,326 tons of the total, worth 11 million dollars, were provided by Peru, which is 29 percent less in volume and 21 percent less in value. It is a product that is shipped mainly indirectly.

Despite experiencing a reduction in shipments, Peru positioned itself as the eighth grape supplier in Germany, with a 2 percent share.

The suppliers that stood out in this market were Italy (29 percent) and South Africa (22 percent).
