Low onion harvests in Europe led to a significant increase in imports, particularly from Australia and, in particular, Tasmania.

According to Australian professionals, onion exports have increased by 117% and onions from Tasmania account for 85% of Australian onions exported. The volume more than doubled and the value of onion exports increased from A $7 million to A $16 million.

European demand jumped due to the production deficit caused by very high temperatures. Climatic conditions may reoccur in the future and lead to a growing demand for Australian onions. However, Australian professionals believe that other niches are also to be considered, such as Indonesia.
