Maharashtra, a state in west-central India, is known for its capital Mumbai and for its fruit production. In particular table grapes of which Nashik District is a major exporter.
In Nashik district table grapes production is important but marketing is a weak point. The many producers entrusted their productions to intermediaries or traders, which caused multiple abuses. In an attempt to remedy these problems, the Maharashtra Grape Growers Association (MGGA) has decided to group agricultural producer enterprises in a joint federation.
Through the federation, traders and other intermediaries will have to register so that farmers sell their products only to these traders.
Nashik District has more than 50,000 farmers growing 150,000 hectares of table grapes. During the past season, exports totaled 143,000 tonnes.
India exports its table grapes mainly to European countries. But Russia is becoming a major market, with demand increasing by 18.19% over the past season, as has China.
