Apple production expected to decline sharply

According to estimates by PROGNOSFRUIT, the annual conference organized by WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association), the main European producers will see a decrease in their volumes for the 2017/2018 season.

 
 
The apple season 2017/2018 in Europe will be characterized by one of the lowest harvests in recent years. Estimates at the European level stand at 9.343 million tonnes, down by 21% from the 2016 crop.
 
 
 
Germany is expected to show the biggest drop with 555 000 tonnes (or -46%). There was also a sharp decline for Poland with 2,870,000 tons (-29%). Italy is expected to decline by 23% with 1,757,000 tonnes forecast. In France, 1,396,000 tonnes were forecast, a decrease of 8%. Belgium lost more than 2/3 of its production and dropped to 74 000 tonnes, while the Netherlands rose from 317 000 tonnes to 234 000 tonnes.
 
 
 
Conversely, Hungary will reach 628 000 tonnes (+ 26%) and Portugal will increase from 263 000 tonnes to 314 000 tonnes. Relative stability for Spain with 474,000 tons, against 495,000 the previous season.
 
 
 
Decreases are also expected in the rest of the northern hemisphere, such as -37% for Russia, -30% for Mexico, -21% for Switzerland, -19% for Belarus, -10% Ukraine and -6% for Canada. The United States is expected to stabilize at 4.8 million tons, while China continues its expansion with 3% growth.
