This year, avocados have reached record price levels, to the point that it has become a luxury for some consumers in Mexico, the world's No. 1 avocado production country.

The average price recorded is 90 pesos (4.70 USD) per kilo, representing a record. This year, a weak crop in Mexico, the world's largest producer, and a lower California crop due to drought, have reduced available volumes.

This weakness of supply is contributing to an increase in demand throughout the world. Demand is increasing in the United States, Canada, Europe, but also in Japan (+ 100%) and China (+ 300%).

Among the other producing countries, Peru, the second largest exporter of avocados in the world after Mexico, suffered severe flooding. South Africa and New Zealand, other producing countries, have also experienced climatic phenomena that have decreased their production.

According to professionals the upward trend is expected to continue and prices remain well above the usual levels.
