Growth of +392% for mango production in Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, mango production has been encouraged to ensure the country's food security. National production can now meet 60% of demand.

According to local media, mango production has increased to 88,600 tons per year, reaching 60% self-sufficiency, in line with the goals of the government's Vision 2030 strategy.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has been keen to increase mango production. In 2005, the country had around 250,000 mango trees producing just over 18,000 tonnes per year, and then this number exceeded 1 million mango trees producing over 65,000 tonnes per year. Now with an additional planted area of over 6,880 hectares, production is estimated at 88,600 tons per year.

The mango growing season runs from April to August, and the country produces over 20 varieties of mangoes, including Awais, Sukkari, and Tommy Atkins. The main production areas are in the Jizan region in the governorates of Sabya, Abu Arish, Al Darb, Samtah and Baish as well as in the governorate of Al Qunfadhah in the Makkah region.
